Egyptian cotton is grown on the banks of the Nile. The Nile has rich and fertile soil and with it’s moderate climate, enables the cotton staple to grow longer. The diameter of the yarn is also finer, so basically Egyptian Cotton is long and fine. In any kind of cotton, the longer the staple, the less joins in the thread, and the finer the yarn, the more threads you can fit in per square inch of fabric, and so you can create strong, durable, yet beautifully soft fabric. Also, cotton grown in the Nile region, also produces less lint, and so the fabric it creates will have little or no pill (bobbles after washing). Egyptian cotton also has the advantage of actually getting softer with each wash. This combined with the absorbent and breathable qualities of cotton in general make it an ideal material for duvet covers, sheets and pillowcases (or bedding in general) and also towels.

Egyptian cotton bedding was once thought to be only a high end product. However, with more efficient manufacturing practices, and indeed manufacturing in lower cost countries, Egyptian cotton bed sets can now be found on the high street. Egyptian cotton bedding with up to 1000 thread counts per square inch, and bath towels up which weigh up to 700 grams per square inch are gorgeously soft and readily available at prices that won’t break the bank!  However, do be careful and ensure the bedding has got the Egyptian cotton logo on it, to make sure it is a genuine article.

As with all bedding, the higher the thread count (threads per square inch), the stronger and softer the fabric will be. High thread count bedding, manufactured correctly will last for years and will look just the same as it did when it was first purchased, wash after wash.     bath towel
