The Room
The bed should be the centerpiece in your room, with fresh brightly coloured sheets and a plush headboard to wake up against. Also placing a bedside table at either side of the bed is both convenient and great for creating symmetry in your room. The bed should be close to a small seating area, this could mean two chairs and a mini table; this luxury living space is great for waking up or preparing for bed. If you’ve got the space a sofa would also make an excellent addition in place of the chairs.
To add to the sophisticated hotel style mood, we recommend a simple colour scheme of two to three co-ordinating colours. This means no contrasting colours as this could make the room look too busy and detract from the mood. For maximum serenity, the room should look clutter free and clean. A plush, deep carpet in a neutral, light tone would contribute perfectly to the lush dream like effect of the room. Pale beige and cream are among the softest and most soothing colours to choose.
Lighting
Lighting should not be overlooked in your bedroom, multiple layers of lighting are required so that the purpose and mood of the room can be adjusted. Designers suggest that having a couple of lamps around the room in a calculated, well balanced placement can make the room feel warm and cosy at night. For a modern look, contemporary wall sconces are perfect, they don’t emit the harsh glare of some ceiling lights and they work well in conjunction with bedside lamps to offer overall, soft, ambient lighting.
You should always plan your lighting carefully, consider the size of your room and take measurements. This is so you don’t illuminate your bedroom too much with clashing lights or lights that are too bright. Considering the type of light to suit your room size is also important, for example floor lights usually emit the most light above and below, so they are ideal for smaller spaces.
Thread Count & Materials
When buying sheets, duvet covers, or pillowcases make sure they’re Egyptian cotton, if there’s one thing the Egyptians taught us it’s how to make a comfortable bed. Egyptian cotton duvet covers and sheets are made with longer strands of fine cotton, this gives the bed set an unrivaled softness which only increases with each wash, with the additional benefit of durability. You can find our full explanation of Egyptian cotton on our blog here. What is Egyptian cotton bedding
Hotel bedding is usually made with a single ply weave, this means that the linen is woven using single threads, rather than twisting multiple threads together for extra weight. Double ply materials tend not to be as smooth as the weave is looser, due to the thickness of the twisted threads, and more likely to tear.
Another factor to consider is thread count, the higher the thread count the smoother the material will feel. For a light and silky feel the 400 to 600 thread count range is ideal, a higher count makes denser and therefore heavier bed linen. For the ultimate in high thread count cotton, try our Dorchester range which has a huge 1000 thread count and is made of 100% cotton. It is really like sleeping under silk, but with the quality and breathability of cotton. Dorchester 1000 thread count cotton bedding. The high thread count also means extra durability.
Duvets & Pillows
Classy hotels always have the best duvets, the standard is a Goose feather and down duvet. Goose feathers are much softer than duck feathers and the stalks on the feathers don’t poke out as much so they won’t break through the cover, the down is from the softer underbelly of the Goose and is perfect for keeping warm while maintaining fluffiness. Synthetic alternatives just cannot compare to the real deal.
It’s essential to own a selection of different pillows and duvets for the year, there’s a variety of different options; from 4 seasons duvets to feather and latex pillows. Another trick hotels use is buying larger duvets and quilt covers than the bed requires, this not only gives you more duvet to snuggle with but looks great spilling over the side of your bed.
Mattress
The quintessential element of hotel quality beds is a high quality mattress. Foam or innerspring coil mattresses are a staple of all the best hotels. The most popular mattress is a firm or medium innerspring model, the more coils it has the better support and durability it will have. Some innerspring mattresses also have a layer of foam on top for extra comfort. Alternatively, a rising trend is memory foam mattresses, while these can be much more expensive, the quality is undeniable. The mattress is made entirely of special foam which moulds to your body shape for sensual, therapeutic comfort. They also reduce air circulation around your body to make you feel warmer.
Accessorise
Outfit your room with stylish modern lamps and utilities; consider matching lamps which complement the ceiling lights. Another recommended bedside embellishment are fresh flowers, these will serve to liven up the room and add some subtle contrast to the modern décor. We recommend minimising the amount of cushions on the bed, too many cushions can make the room feel cluttered. Placing a couple on the bed and one in the seating area is more than enough.
Treat yourself to a morning refreshment with the latest in coffee brewing technology, or even breakfast in bed with the implementation of a well-placed mini fridge.
Blackout curtains are a must, it’s as simple as the darker it is in your room the better sleep you will get. These magical curtains use special tightly woven fabrics to completely blot out the sun. These fabrics also help to insulate heat, so they stop heat from entering in the summer and keep your room cosy in the winter.
