Here comes the summer!

At the end of a long, cold and dark winter, nothing feels better than a quick makeover to banish those winter blues for the rest of the year! Have the spring flowers, green leaves and new life outside inspired you to refresh your home? Read on as I explain how to give your bedroom a new lease of life for the spring and summer seasons.

1. Spring Cleaning.

Before starting any home makeover project, even just a new look for your bedroom, it’s sensible to first thoroughly clean the area you’ll be working in. Not only will this make your room fresh and ready for the rest of the year, it will make it easier to transform your room into a spring and summer haven of tranquillity. I often find the therapeutic process of de-cluttering to be the real start of spring. Make sure you maintain this new cleanliness – investing in storage boxes or chests can be a great way to keep a room tidy.bucket-303265_640

2. Be inspired!

Take inspiration from the changing scenery outside. Whilst walking through parks or fields, stop to enjoy the vibrant new flowers and their fragrant aromas. Notice the bright, fresh new leaves on the trees and the charming sights of young animals. You can take inspiration from these sights whilst planning your new spring and summer makeover – many designers will reference these iconic scenes in their work, and this may form the basis of your home’s look for the next few months.

3. Know what you need!

Before purchasing any new bedding, you need to know the size of your mattress, duvet and bed. Most UK beds are a standard size – either single, double, king or super king. Mattresses can be extra deep, and bedding sizes in different countries may differ. Be sure of what you need before you buy – there’s nothing worse than buying the perfect duvet cover set or sheet, then finding it doesn’t fit!

As tduck egg curtains broadwayhe days get longer and brighter, it may be worth investing in a new pair of curtains. Heavy weight and fully lined curtains are perfect for preventing those early morning rays of light from disturbing your peaceful slumber. Most readymade curtains have a complementary themed cushion to help co-ordinate colours. Ensure you note what type of heading is needed. Before buying any new bedding or curtains, I’d recommend reading through the buying guides on our website.

4. Materials and fabrics for spring.

The warmer temperatures in spring and summer signal the perfect time to change from those heavy weight blankets, high tog duvets and brushed cotton flannelette duvet covers to lighter materials. You’ll want to look for bedding made from soft, lightweight cotton or polycotton materials and choose a lighter tog duvet or quilt to ensure you stay cool and comfortable as the weather warms up. This will help ensure you get the best night’s sleep you can.

5.Let your bedroom bloom!floral duvet cover

Let your bedroom bloom with floral patterns. Spring and summer call for soft pastel shades, such as soft yellow, pale blues, pinks and greens. These colours will bring the spring and summer sun outside into your life. If floral patterns aren’t suitable for you or your room, consider a natural pattern, featuring birds or more subtle foliage. For a more masculine or gender neutral room, a checked or striped pattern in summer colours is a safe bet. Many duvet covers are reversible, and combine a bolder pattern on the face of the duvet cover with a more understated pattern on the reverse, so you may get away with having one cover for all seasons. Flowingly extending the theme of your bedding to certain key areas in your room with accessories, will create an overall summery feel.

6.I Do Like To Beside the Sea-side

Beach Huts Duvet CoverWhat better way to create a summer feel in your room than by taking inspiration from the sea? Applying seaside colours such as blues, pale greens, yellows and whites create a bedroom reminiscent of your favourite summer holiday. Nautical and sea themes are an increasingly popular trend in bedding and other accessories such as cushion covers and curtains. These designs are perfect for teenage or gender neutral rooms, such as spare or guest rooms.

7.Accessorise!

Complete your bedroom spring and summertime transformation with accessories. Matching and complementary accessories are the key to creating a whole new look, at a bargain price.
Whether you’re looking for matching curtains and cushion covers, soft throwovers, or a rug that really ties the room together, there’s bound to be something for you! Looking for bargain bundles of the bed set you’re interested in can often work out cheaper than buying all, or even some, of the accessories separately. Finish off your spring and summer themed bedroom by co-ordinating your floral bedding with a vase of fresh cut flowers.

If your bedroom has an ensuite bathroom, consider extending the bright and breezy colours of your spring and summer bedroom with new towels, bathmats and sheets.

8. Let the light in!

The spring and summer seasons are great because of the sun – we all perk up a little bit when the sun is shining. During the longer days, you’ll want to let in as much light as possible – you’ll miss it those gloomy winter months. Why not invest in some curtain tiebacks which will hold the curtains open and add some summery style? Whilst many pairs of curtains include these, you can purchase them separately. Cleverly place mirrors around your home to reflect the incoming light – they can also help make a room feel bigger. The lighter, softer toned bedding associated with the spring / summer seasons are perfect for making rooms feel brighter.
