Emma Bridgewater is a popular and unique designer, her works of art have been used to create many decorative pieces of furniture, kitchenware and bedding.
It is very likely that even if you have not heard of her; you will have almost certainly seen some of her work.
Who is Emma Bridgewater?
Emma’s venture into the design business began 30 years ago. She wanted to find a gift for her mother’s birthday that stood out, unfortunately for her, nothing she saw looked quite right.
As a result of this, she decided to make and decorate a mug she thought would be beautiful as well as practical.
Her venture was popular and became very successful.
Now sales have reached over 15 million for her works, which have also been redesigned and re used for bedding, so if you aren’t into pottery or mugs, you can still appreciate the quality of work by getting yourself a nice quilt with one of Emma’s many designs.
If you are looking to give your bedroom a cosy and happy feel, then look no further than Emma’s designs.
Company ethos
The company is sourced in England, with 3 major shops; these are located in London, Edinburgh and Stoke on Trent, where the main factory is situated.
Her pottery is hand made in the UK but the bedding is licensed and made abroad from a machine.
The fact that the shops are in England means that the locals can have a long term job without worrying about the future, plus they can be creative too! Most of the jobs undertaken have been passed down through countless generations of families. Over 180 people are employed by the company.
In the Company’s first year of business, it managed to generate a turnover of around £30,000. By the year 2009, the annual turnover increased to almost £8 million and by 2010 they reached £11 million, this has been increasing each year since.
What makes it special?
Emma Bridgewater’s designs are unique and special; a lot of which is to do with the characteristics of design and the way the work is produced. A major piece they are noted for is their take on the polka dot design amongst others; with many of the themes drawing on techniques stretching back over 200 years. The company adds a fresh look to old and dated ideas by adding their own unique touch.
Bedding Designs
Whilst Emma Bridgwater is known mainly for pottery, a lot of their design ideas have been reproduced and imported into many other household items, one of which is bedding. Here we take a look at some of the most popular designs available. Averaging out between £9-68 depending on what you buy. A lot has to do with the sizing but you can be sure that whatever you pay it will most definitely be worth the money.
Black Toast – Cream
The first Design we are looking at is called Black Toast – cream. This bedding is black and white, consists of black love hearts and romantic sayings, such as, “love and kisses”, “true love and high adventure” and the slightly less romantic but still cheerful, “oh bliss! Five minutes peace!” which if you have kids is extremely hard to come by! Even if you don’t, the five minutes peace from daily life can certainly improve your mood. The bedding design makes light of this situation in a quirky manner.
The bedding itself is made from a soft cotton sateen, which you can be sure is 100% cotton. The sateen, although still fully cotton is made in such a way that it makes the bedding seem silky which feels great on skin. It is also durable and light so great for the summer when it can get a bit warm, as well as keeping you toasty in the winter months.
The pattern on the bed was made using an intricate cross hatch design, with a 200 thread count, which gives it a high quality, handmade feel and finish. A lot of care and attention to detail has been made when making this bedding. You can get the duvet covers in double, king or super king bed sizes, with matching pillowcases sold separately.
Men at Work
Emma Bridgewater has also taken to designing boys duvet sets, this particular design consists of construction vehicles in different colours, most notably green, yellow and orange, with various road signs dedicated to roadwork and construction.
There is also writing across the duvet, located under each line of vehicles, saying, “Cars, Tractors, Lorries, Diggers,”
This would be a perfect addition to any little boys’ room who loves tractors and diggers.
This product is also made from 100% cotton with a high quality finish. This particular set is available in both double and single sizes.
Rose and Bee Bed linen
The last bedding design on our list is the Rose and Bee bed linen. Again made from 100% sateen cotton, it is mainly pink and white with pretty flowers and hearts, giving the bedding a romantic and cosy feel. This bedding is available from double to super king.
